Not a typical faithcheck video. Since it seems that most people viewing this channel are Atheist, this video targets you. I’ll go back to the regular format for the on-the-fence Christian audience on the next video.

While the purpose of this video is to motivate you to take some risks and take a stand against religion, please use your best judgement. I live in an area where it is safe to be an Atheist. If you live in small town in Mississippi, then you might want to keep your Atheism to yourself for the safety of you and your family :-)

I’ve come to realize that while Free Thinkers are winning the battle on Youtube, that’s unfortunately not the case on Facebook. Christians are using Facebook as their personal soapboxes to spread their faith around, while Free Thinkers stand by silently.

This is probably because you can be anonymous on youtube, and that facebook is the opposite of anonymous – you are connected to your family and old friends. And in America, family and old friends usually means a large group of devout Christians. Information does not flow freely because of a desire to not offend your family and old friends.

This is a short personal anecdote about trying to promote rationalism on facebook, and some motivation for everyone to get out there and do the same.

On Easter Sunday this year, my sister took her three grade school aged sons to see Heavens Gates and Hells Flames. In case have never heard of it, it is a dramatic performance that shows people dying and standing before heavens gates to be judged. The purpose of Heavens Gates and Hells Flames is to drive fear and scare you into accepting Jesus. Here is a two minute sample video of the production.

After taking her kids to that show, my sister posted a clip on facebook similar to the one that you just watched. She received nothing but positive comments about what a wonderful and powerful show it was. Nobody posted a negative comment about what a terrible scene that was – nothing to question the likeliness that there was a God who would create a scenario where a good mother goes to be tortured for eternity because she didn’t accept Jesus before she died, no comments to say “Shame on you” for taking your kids to this show.

If you are like me, then you have probably been wanting to make comments like this, but you hold back because you don’t want to upset your friends. I really wanted to do something this time. I do not want my daughter to have to live in a society where it is honorable to brag about taking your kids to see a shameless fear-slinging show like Heavens Gates and Hells Flames.

Realizing that I am not going to win this battle with direct confrontation, I decided to start with small things. I started posting facebook comments on my own wall – like this one. I’m sure this has very little impact on believers, but at least it’s something. It let people know where I stood – that I am not cool with the things that Christian bullies do in our government and in our society.

Was it was incredibly difficult to actually press the submit button? YES! Many of my friends and family are devout Christians – a handful of them are pastors now. Did it start a shit-storm of comments from believers? Well, yes – but that died down fairly quickly. Did it offend some of my friends and family? Probably – but we have spoken since then and we are still cool. Did it have positive effects? Absolutely. Some of my friends who I didn’t expect “liked” my comment or posted similar comments on their own walls. One of my childhood friends who I hadn’t seen in years let me know that he too had shed his faith, and was never sure if he could tell me about it. He was in town and we were able to get together for a beer and talk about old times.

In addition to that, I felt a great feeling of personal freedom and a feeling of satisfaction that I had done the right thing. That I had planted some seeds – and that those seeds might grow to ultimately help to loosen the grip that Faith has on my loved ones – and that it might also encourage other nonbelievers to come out.

Those of us who are free from Faith, have a ripe opportunity to make a difference. Why? Because many of us have not yet spoken out. All we have to do is start. Because the little things will create a snowball effect toward an environment where the next generation will live free of superstition and unnecessary fear.

And with that I will leave you with the sappiest, most relevant most motivational football locker room speech that I could find. Enjoy!
